Computing

Curriculum Statement

Technology is changing the lives of everyone. Through teaching computing, we equip our children to participate in a rapidly changing world where work and leisure activities are being increasingly transformed by technology.

It is our intention to enable our children to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information. We also focus on developing the skills necessary for our children to be able to use information in a discriminating and effective way.

Computing skills are a major factor in enabling our children to be confident, creative and independent learners, and it is our intention that our children have every opportunity available to allow them to achieve this.

Moreover, we want our children to know how to keep themselves safe using the internet.

Intent

  • To have very high expectations in computing across the whole school so that children are ready for a technological world.
  • To provide a broad and balanced curriculum which is progressive in knowledge, skills and vocabulary.
  • To give our children the knowledge and skills to keep themselves safe online through our progressive and encompassing online safety curriculum.
  • To offer our children new and exciting computing opportunities and experiences.
  • To promote our school and British Values.
  • To prepare our children for the next steps in their learning journey.

Implementation

The teaching and learning of computing is split into three main aspects taken from the National Curriculum. The three aspects are:

  • Computer Science-This aspect of the curriculum allows the children to find out how computers and computer systems work. They can then apply this knowledge through programming. Computer science is taught throughout the school at an age appropriate level.
  • Digital Literacy-Becoming digitally literate enables the children to become safe users of technology. We teach the children the value of technology, how to use computers safely and how to evaluate online content.
  • Information Technology-The teaching of information technology gives the children the ability to create, edit, analyse, save and retrieve purposeful digital content including text, data and pictures. The children are able to use a variety of software and effectively use search technologies. They are also able to apply their learning in other areas of the curriculum.·

Impact

At Nicol Mere, we recognise the unique needs of each child and support them in reaching their  potential. The impact of our Computing curriculum is measured in the competence and knowledge of our children within the subject and the confidence to apply the skills they have been taught, in other subjects and within the wider world. Also, the children know how to be respectful and responsible users of technology who keep themselves safe. Progression of skills is evident in the children’s work and through pupil interviews where the children are using subject specific vocabulary.
