PSHE Curriculum and Working With Others To Keep Ourselves Safe

PSHE Curriculum & Working With Others To Keep Ourselves Safe

Our PSHE Statement

PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) is an important and necessary part of children’s education as we prepare them for their future lives.

Today, our children are growing up in an increasingly complex world and are living their lives seamlessly on and offline. This presents many positive and exciting opportunities, but also challenges and risks. Through teaching PSHE, we equip our children with the knowledge and skills of how to be safe and healthy, both physically and mentally, and how to manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way.

It is our intention to give our children the knowledge, skills and understanding to lead confident, healthy and independent lives in preparation for life’s challenges and opportunities that they will face growing up in modern Britain.

It is crucial that children are able to navigate life’s challenges and experiences, and it is our intention at Nicol Mere to provide our children with the skills to allow them to achieve this. Everyone faces difficult situations in their life, and it is our intention to teach our children how to develop resilience, the capacity to make sound decisions when facing risks, and know how and when to ask for help.

Intent

  • To provide a broad and balanced PSHE curriculum which is catered to meet the needs of our children and which is progressive in knowledge, skills and vocabulary
  • To equip children with the knowledge and skills to be able to; keep themselves safe and healthy, both physically and mentally, know how to develop healthy relationships and understand risk by making safe and informed decisions
  • To promote our children’s personal development as well as their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development
  • To develop and deepen pupils’ understanding of the fundamental British values of democracy, individual liberty, the rule of law and mutual respect and tolerance
  • To ensure that our curriculum teaches children based on information that is up-to-date, accurate, unbiased and balanced
  • To prepare our children for the next steps in their learning journey and enable them to manage the most critical opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face growing up
  • To provide children with the knowledge and understanding to play an active, successful and positive role in today’s diverse society and to increase their ‘cultural capital’ by giving them the tools to be successful in the world of work, in relationships forged in life and as a valued contributor to society as a whole

Implementation

The teaching and learning of PSHE is based on three core themes:

Theme 1: Relationships

Theme 2: Personal, social and economic

Theme 3: Health and Wellbeing

The statutory guidance of Relationships (RSE) and Health Education is comprehensively covered in learning opportunities across all three core themes. At Nicol Mere, our curriculum aims to use these core themes to develop knowledge, skills and attributes that are revisited, reinforced and progressively extended upon year on year.

Impact

At Nicol Mere, we recognise the unique needs of each child and promote an inclusive environment where all children are able to meet their full potential. By the time children leave Nicol Mere, they will:

  • be able to approach a range of real life situations and apply their skills and attributes to help navigate themselves in the modern world
  • have the skills and understanding of how to become healthy, respectful, resilient, active members of society
  • appreciate difference and diversity
  • be able to understand and manage their emotions
  • be able to look after their mental health and well-being
  • be able to develop positive, healthy relationships, both now and in the future, on and offline
  • have respect for themselves and others
  • have a positive self-esteem

The impact of our PSHE curriculum is measured by the children’s confidence and competence within the subject. Children’s knowledge and skills are obtained through the use of discussions, pupil questionnaires, book scrutiny and pupils’ voices.

We continuously assess the implementation and impact of our PSHE curriculum in order to achieve the highest outcomes possible across all year groups and ensure we provide the support that is necessary for all children to achieve.

Sex and Relationship Education

Sex and Relationships Education (SRE) is an important part of the PSHE curriculum as it allows our children to understand and know what constitutes a healthy relationship (real life and online).

Additional content has been added to our SRE. This decision was made following a consultation with parents. Along with our staff, parents carefully considered what our children need to know and understand at what age. Their knowledge, understanding and experiences of their own children helped to decide.

Please see our SRE policy for more information.

Working With Others to Keep Our Children Safe

Operation Encompass

Operation Encompass directly connects the police with schools to ensure better outcomes for children who are subject or witness to police-attended incidents of domestic abuse. Rapid provision of support within the school environment means children are better safeguarded against the short-, medium- and long-term effects of domestic abuse.

Our Keeping Ourselves Safe Curriculum teaches our children about healthy relationships, including friendships and online relationships, and how to get help and if needed. This gives our children the knowledge and skills to deal with situations they may see at home or encounter as they grow up.
