Computing
Computing Curriculum Statement
Technology is rapidly transforming the way we live, work, and learn. At Nicol Mere, we recognise the importance of preparing our children for this ever-evolving digital world. Through a high-quality computing curriculum, we aim to develop pupils who are not only confident and competent users of technology, but also creative, analytical, and responsible digital citizens.
We equip our children with the skills to find, explore, analyse, exchange, and present information, using technology in a purposeful and effective way. More importantly, we place a strong emphasis on online safety, ensuring pupils know how to protect themselves and act responsibly in the digital space.
Intent
Our intent is to:
- Set high expectations in computing across the school to prepare children for a technological future
- Deliver a broad, balanced, and progressive curriculum in knowledge, skills, and vocabulary
- Ensure children know how to stay safe online, supported by our structured online safety programme
- Provide exciting, hands-on computing experiences
- Promote both school and British Values through the responsible use of technology
- Prepare children for the next stages of learning and life in a digital age
Implementation
Our computing curriculum is based on the three core strands of the National Curriculum, each taught in an age-appropriate and engaging way:
1. Computer Science
Children learn how computers and systems work, developing their understanding through programming and coding activities. This lays the foundation for logical thinking and problem-solving.
2. Digital Literacy
Pupils are taught how to be safe, responsible, and discerning users of digital technologies. They explore the value of online tools while learning how to evaluate and navigate digital content safely.
3. Information Technology
Children develop practical skills by creating, editing, and presenting digital content. They work with text, data, images, and multimedia, using a variety of software. These skills are applied across subjects to enhance their learning and creativity.
Impact
We understand that every child learns differently, and our computing curriculum is designed to help each pupil reach their full potential. The impact of our teaching is evident in pupils’ ability to confidently apply their skills across the curriculum and in real-world contexts.
Children become digitally literate learners, able to communicate using subject-specific vocabulary and demonstrate their knowledge in a range of formats. Most importantly, they leave Nicol Mere as responsible, respectful, and safe users of technology, ready to thrive in the digital world.
