PSHE Curriculum & Working With Others To Keep Ourselves Safe
PSHE & Keeping Ourselves Safe
At Nicol Mere, we understand that growing up in today’s world comes with both exciting opportunities and complex challenges. Our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) curriculum is designed to give every child the knowledge and confidence they need to stay safe, build healthy relationships, and make informed life decisions—online and offline.
Our PSHE Curriculum
PSHE plays a vital role in preparing children for life beyond the classroom. Through carefully planned lessons and enriching experiences, our curriculum supports their physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing, as well as their social and cultural development. We aim to develop resilient, respectful, and compassionate individuals ready to thrive in modern Britain.
Intent
To provide a broad, balanced and progressive curriculum tailored to meet the needs of all pupils.
To help children stay safe, develop healthy relationships, and make informed decisions.
To promote children’s spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development.
To deepen understanding of British values: democracy, the rule of law, liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance.
To ensure our teaching is up-to-date, accurate and inclusive.
To build cultural capital, preparing children for success in life, relationships and the workplace.
Implementation
Our PSHE teaching is structured around three core themes:
Relationships
Health and Wellbeing
Personal, Social and Economic Education
Each theme develops progressively year on year and incorporates key aspects of statutory RSE (Relationships & Sex Education) and Health Education. Through these themes, children revisit, reinforce and extend key life skills and knowledge in meaningful ways.
Impact
By the time they leave Nicol Mere, our children will be:
Equipped to navigate real-life situations with confidence.
Healthy, resilient, respectful and active members of society.
Emotionally aware, with strategies to manage mental wellbeing.
Able to form and maintain positive, healthy relationships.
Appreciative of diversity, with a strong sense of self-worth and mutual respect.
Impact is measured through discussions, pupil voice, book scrutiny and ongoing assessment, ensuring our approach remains relevant and impactful for all learners.

Sex and Relationship Education (SRE)
SRE is a key part of our PSHE curriculum and helps children understand the importance of healthy, respectful relationships—both online and offline. Following consultation with parents, age-appropriate additions have been made to ensure the content is relevant, inclusive, and supportive of pupils’ wellbeing.

Working With Others to Keep Children Safe
Operation Encompass
We are proud to be part of Operation Encompass, a national initiative connecting schools and police to provide rapid support to children affected by domestic abuse. This helps safeguard their wellbeing and ensures they receive the emotional care needed following any incident.
Keeping Ourselves Safe Curriculum
Our PSHE teaching also includes learning about safe friendships, boundaries, and how to access help. These lessons empower children to recognise unsafe situations, know where to seek support, and build the resilience needed to stay safe at home, at school, and online.
