School Meals at Nicol Mere
At Nicol Mere, we’re proud to offer healthy, freshly prepared school meals every day. All pupils in Reception, Year 1, and Year 2 are automatically entitled to a free school meal as part of the government’s Universal Infant Free School Meals initiative.
Our school dinners are provided by Local Kitchen and can be ordered online using the ‘My Evolve Hub’ system. Each day, children can choose from up to eight nutritious options, catering to a variety of tastes and dietary needs. Meals cost £2.55 per day and must be ordered by 8:15am on the day required – or can be booked in advance.
If your child has a dietary requirement, a tailored menu will be made available via the online ordering platform.
Children may also bring a healthy packed lunch from home if preferred.
Snacks and Water
All children have access to fresh drinking water throughout the day.
Children in Years 1 to 6 can either:
- Bring a healthy snack for breaktime
- Or choose to have toast and milk, available for a small termly fee
Free Fruit and Veg
As part of the government scheme, children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 receive a free piece of fruit or vegetable each day during morning break.
Free School Meals – Are You Eligible?
Your child may be entitled to means-tested Free School Meals, and we strongly encourage all eligible families to apply—even if your child prefers packed lunches. If eligible:
- Your child can choose a sandwich meal instead of a hot meal
- You may receive reduced costs on: School Uniforms, Music Lessons or Certain School Trips
Applying for Free School Meals is confidential and handled with great care. No stigma is attached, and all arrangements are discreet.

- Your local library (Abram, Ashton, Aspull, Atherton, Golborne, Ince, Orrell, Standish)
- Wigan Civic Centre, Leigh Town Hall, the Council Tax Office in Whelley, or any Wigan and Leigh Housing office
