Playleaders
Playleaders
At Nicol Mere, our Playleaders are a fantastic team of Key Stage 2 children who work closely with our lunchtime staff to make sure playtimes are safe, inclusive, and full of fun. These responsible pupils help create a positive environment where everyone feels included and supported.
What do our Playleaders do?
Trained by Miss Shield, our junior Playleaders are taught how to use and manage play equipment responsibly and how to encourage cooperative play among younger children. Their daily duties include:
Setting up and tidying away playground equipment
Keeping the container neat and organised
Ensuring the playground is safe and obstacle-free
Looking out for children who may feel lonely and inviting them to join in
Encouraging fun, active, and friendly play for all
In the process, Playleaders develop a wealth of skills—leadership, communication, cooperation, organisation, safety awareness, and empathy. They gain confidence and a real sense of achievement from helping others.
Playleader Rewards & Recognition
We love to celebrate the hard work and dedication of our Playleaders! Pupils receive certificates for completing training activities and booklets, and we regularly award:
Playleader of the Week
Playleader of the Month
Rewards are based on following school values and upholding the Playleader Code of Conduct.
The Playleaders also run a brilliant peer reward system, where they give out Playleader Points to pupils who show kindness, teamwork, or perseverance during play. At the end of each term, those with the most points receive special prizes.
Pupil Voice and Creativity
Many of the best playtime ideas come from the children themselves. Playleaders help choose new equipment and often invent games that become playground favourites. Their input ensures playtime is truly by the children, for the children.
